Ring!! Ring!! That’s the telephone! Who does the telephone remind you of? He was an amazing person with a lot of imagination. This is his story.
Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in the city of Edinburgh,Scotland. His mother was almost deaf, but was a great pianist and artist. His father and grandfather were both helping people to improve their speech. Alexander Graham Bell’s name was passed on from his father and grandfather.
Once when he was very young, his parents took him on a picnic and he got lost in a field of tall wheat. He was actually trying to hear the wheat grow and could tell which neighbors dog was barking. Alexander’s best talent was playing the piano. Alexander was sure he would grow up to be a famous musician. Alexander’s parents were very proud that he liked piano. Once when he was 12 years old, he was sitting in the barn. He was looking at the wheat and thought of making a machine for that. Alexander added brushes to the machine. Mr. Herdman, the farmer in the barn, was amazed. He told that the wheat husker was Alexander’s first invention.
Alexander graduated high school at only age fourteen. After he graduated high school, he stayed with his grandfather in London for a year. While he was staying with his grandfather, he grew up from a boy to a man.
His father took him to see scientist Charles Wheatstone. Wheatstone showed his talking machine to them. His father then suggested that Alexander and his brother Melly, make a talking machine. They built their talking machine out of rubber and part of an organ. The invention worked! It was so loud that one neighbor thought their baby was crying!
Later he went to Boston, Massachusetts to work in a school for the deaf. One of his students was Mabel Hubbard. One day Alexander went to her house to talk about Alexander’s invention. Mabel’s father Gardiner Hubbard was impressed and Alexander and Mabel were in love. On July 11, 1877 Alexander and Mabel were married. They had two daughters, Elise and Marian.
The Bell Telephone Company was established in 1872. Bell developed many flying machines. One of his flying machines was called The Silver Dart. The Silver Dart was first flown in Canada.
In 1876, Alexander transmitted human speech for the first time. Bell and Watson were in two different rooms trying to make a new type of transmitter. One day Alexander was testing the telephone. He talked over the telephone and said “Mr. Watson come here!”I want to see you!” It worked! Bell and Watson showed his invention to many people.
Alexander was proud that his invention worked. The First Telephone Company was formed on July 9, 1877.
On July 8, 1881 President James Garfield was shot and killed. Alexander invented a metal detector to find the bullets. The invention didn’t work for the president, but helped others.
In 1880, Alexander won the Volta Prize for the telephone invention. Bell was interested in flying. His airplanes had two wings on each side. He called these airplanes aerodromes. In 1909, he made the first airplane flight in Canada. Alexander was also interested in boats. He invented boats called hydrofoils. In 1919, his hydrofoils had a record of ninety miles per hour. He continued to invent things for the rest of his life.
He had diabetes leading to a heart attack. Alexander died on August 2, 1922.
”When one door closes, the other one opens.”
When you are sending a letter, it would take a couple of days to get to it’s place. If you send by telegraph,it would take a minute. But with Alexander’s help, he made the message get to it’s place in just a couple of seconds. The telephone helped us talk to each other far or near.
Thank You
