The world of forensic science has evolved in a huge way and modern technologies like DNA analysis have helped investigators to solve many mysteries which would have been remained as unsolved cold cases in the past. The thrill behind the crime investigation had possibly inspired many authors like Agatha Christie, Caroline Keene etc to create famous fiction characters like Poirot, Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes. Many stories were shown through movies, TV shows like Law and Order, Mentalist etc. There is nothing better than a crime thriller fiction story which can keep you on your toes to find out what happens next and most importantly , “WHO IS THE KILLER?”.
Recently, I had attended a crime investigation 4 days workshop, part of STEM workshop series at my school, along with other students. On Day 1, there was a “crime scene” shown on the floor which is basically a “drawn person” on the ground with some evidence about his murder around. The crime plot was about a man called Felix Navidad, who just bought 2 Bedroom/1 bathroom beach house and found dead in his new house few hours after the housewarming party was over. There were 4 prime suspects , supposedly his close friends who attended the party and questions to be answered were — Who killed him? Was he even murdered? What evidence leads us to figure out who killed him?
During 4 days investigation workshop, we students discussed every possible angle based on available evidences. Teachers guided us all along to make educated guesses and core idea was to “infer on our own opinions”. In the end, our findings led to a trial in which we all “testified” against our primary suspects. This whole activity was fun filled and made me learn so many new things about an crime investigation process. My curious mind was tickled enough with this STEM exercise and it made me wonder , may be when I grow up I may want to become a ‘Forensics Analyst’ or a Criminology expert ! Who Knows ?
Suspense ,Mystery books has not been my favorite genre until I attended this workshop. I always liked to read comedy, humor realistic fiction stories. As a student, its very helpful to get exposed to such real-life equivalent exercises and I think every school should provide more of such activities. I love STEM even more now :-)
