Have you ever heard the expression “The skin you’re in.”? I’ve heard the expression too! If you think skin is the largest organ in your body, well your wrong! Find out why in this article I’m going to summarize.

According to Dr Neil Theise, an anatomist, the massive organ was hiding in plain sight overlooked because the human tissue is currently studied by treating the thinly-sliced cell samples with chemicals. His team members at New York University’s School of Medicine encountered on what may be the human body’s largest organ. It is called the interstitium, known for its network of fluid-filled spaces. The organ protects the rest of the organs from scars. Take that skin!

The discovery made worldwide attention after the study was published in the journal Scientific Journal on March 27, 2018. The writers wrote that the scientists made a theory that since the fluid in the interstitium feeds into the lymphatic system, it might give us a reply to how cancer cells spread so rapidly during metastasis. The scientists used an endoscope, an instrument used to look inside closely at the human body, to study frozen living tissues at a microscopic level. They used a patient’s bile duct

Even though the skin accounts for around 15 percent of your body weight and when stretched out is 2 square meters, it is not the largest organ. Your skin has three layers, the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutis. The epidermis is the part of your skin that is visible, dead and waterproof. The dermis is the part of your skin beneath the epidermis. This is where your body produces sweat and where your hair follicles are located. Your skin fat is located in the subcutis, the part of your skin beneath the dermis. Blood vessels which carry oxygen and nutrients all over your body are located here.
