Christopher Columbus was a villain because he demolished so many Native American lives just he could be praised for discovering and conquering land. Even if the Columbian Exchange was a big part of the history of trade, the explorers brought diseases that almost wiped out several tribal populations. He also surprisingly lied in his diary. For example, as in Document 1, Columbus said “I showed them swords and they grasped them by the blade and cut themselves through ignorance. They have not iron.” But in Document 4, the short account of Bartolome de Las Casas, a missionary priest said” .. They thought nothing of knifing Indians by tens and twenties and of cutting slices of them to test the sharpness of their blades.” That really shows how the same subject and idea can have very different consequences or views.
Honestly, Columbus should have treated all of the people on Hispaniola and his crew equally. He shouldn’t have taken all the power for himself and partially for his crew. Even though started a trade between the two continents in which it created countries to have their “star food’, we all still had food! It’s sick to think about him using the people which he should’ve created peace with as slaves! In the 2 different documents as shown before, people should definitely believe that Las Casas is right. Columbus deliberately lied to make the people look poor and not smart. Yes, the Natives probably never used that advanced of a blade but they do have a knowledge of weapons for war. That’s why Columbus is a villain not a hero.
